Linnaeus: new source code

What is Linnæus

Linnæus is an application/interface (by Fabien Olivry) for creating a categorization (classification) type of interactive exercises using a javascript file (Drag and drop to columns - quiz script) from www.dhtmlgoodies.com (by Alf Magne Kalleland).

My contribution

I used the latest (as of 20 Oct. 2013) version of the javascript file and created my own source file. The script is slightly modified - some code that is not used in the exercise is removed, added navigation buttons, rounded corners and dropshades, fluid design. There's a hard-coded 'Back' button! Although the look and feel is partly based on Hot Potatoes, the exercise is not created with Hot Potatoes, but Linnaeus!

Licensing

- Linnaeus is released under a Creative Commons by-nc-sa License.
- The Drag and drop to columns - quiz script is LGPL3 (NonCommercial). For commercial use, you are advised to buy a license from dhtmlgoodies.com.

How to use

  1. Download Linnaeus from www.sequane.com and unpack it (e.g. C:\Program Files\Linnaeus\)
  2. Go inside the Linnaeus folder (C:\Program Files\Linnaeus\sourcecode) and rename the old source file source.ht_ to old-source.ht_. You may as well delete it completely.
  3. Download the new source file Linnaeus_sourcecode.zip and unzip it. Copy the new file source.ht_ and the license.txt from the zip and paste them in the sourcecode folder.
  4. Create your exercise

RTL (right-to-left) languages

To enable RTL (Hebrew or Arabic), open the source.ht_ file and read the short instructions near the top of the document Instructions for RTL - Hebrew and Arabic.

Known issues

- Linnaeus doesn't remember the 'Title of the link (Sommaire)' and the 'URL to page' in the Parameters tab when reopening the data file(s).
- I couldn't figure out the text color placeholder, so all text defaults to black. No use trying to put any other colour.

Examples

- the old-looking original output
- with the new source file
